Shout-out to the woman at Aldi...

Image
A few years back I first found out about keto and it saved me during a tough time in my life. After hitting my goal weight I got lazy. I didn’t want to log macros anymore, I thought I could just increase my physical activity, etc etc. We’ve seen this before and it didn’t work for me either. I gained some pounds back, my mind got foggy again, and I accepted this new normal. I went to Aldi the day after thanksgiving here in the US so I could score a turkey on sale. While there another woman and I casually did laps to find different items and we passed one another a few times. When she reached for the bacon I casually glanced at her cart and saw the classic keto starting lineup: avocados, pork rinds, sour cream, heavy cream, sausages, etc. Before I could stop myself I said “hey that looks like everything you’d get for the keto...”. Her eyes lit up and she smiled and explained that she was going back to it after her and her husband had stopped a few months back. We chatted a bi...

Is Watermelon Keto-Friendly?

Image
Watermelon is a delicious and refreshing summertime staple. In addition to promoting hydration thanks to its high water content, it’s a good source of several nutrients, including vitamins C and A ( 1 ). What’s more, watermelon contains several antioxidants, such as lycopene, which may be linked to improved heart health and a lower risk of certain cancers ( 2 Trusted Source ). You may wonder whether watermelon can fit into the ketogenic, or keto diet, an eating pattern that involves limiting your carb intake and eating a high amount of healthy fats instead. Given that the keto diet is highly restrictive and requires strict adherence to maximize results, many fruits are considered off-limits, causing some to find it somewhat challenging to follow. This article determines whether watermelon can be enjoyed as part of a healthy keto diet. Carb content of watermelon Because most fruits are high in carbs, those following the ketogenic diet can only enjoy them in small a...

I lost a person! | KETO Diet effect

Image
A few days ago I posted an image from my weight loss tracker saying I had hit 120 pounds down. At first I didn’t think anything of it, other than excitement of course, but then a friend put it into perspective. She replied with, “You lost a whole person!” Can you believe that? A PERSON! I always find ways to put that number into perspective. I always try to pick up dog food, or potato bags in the store and imagine it, but I never can. I can never see the full scale of what that large number means. But a person - I lost a small, fit, person. Haha. Now that’s incredibly cool to think about.

Keto Thanksgiving Sausage Stuffing - Keto thanksgiving menu

Image
Add this outstanding savory, herby keto Thanksgiving sausage stuffing to your Thanksgiving table! Everyone knows the best part of the Thanksgiving meal are the yummy side dishes! My favorite part of turkey day is the stuffing, and I promise no one will even miss the  grains or carbs  in this flavorful stuffing. Time to make the biscuits! The secret to keeping this stuffing low carb is first baking and then crumbling up  these homemade keto biscuits  using  almond flour  and cheddar cheese. These biscuits become the base for this recipe. It’s a genius idea that makes this stuffing over the top YUMMY! From there on, the rest of the process is pretty much the same as most sausage stuffing recipes – just use chicken broth and fresh herbs like sage and parsley. KETO THANKSGIVING SAUSAGE STUFFING yield:  8 SERVINGS prep time:  30 MINUTES cook time:  30 MINUTES total time:  60 MINUTES Use keto biscuits to make an...

Eating a keto diet may give some protection against the flu

Image
Ditching carbohydrates and eating lots of fat may give some protection against the flu. Feeding mice the so-called keto diet seems to boost certain immune cells, which may be responsible for the effect. The keto diet forces the body to burn fat for energy, which can help with weight loss, and people may get flu-like symptoms known as the “keto flu” as their body adapts to so little carbohydrate. The keto diet has also been linked to improved  heart health and control of blood sugar in diabetes , but much of the evidence is conflicting. Akiko Iwasaki at Yale School of Medicine and colleagues previously found that the keto diet reduced inflammation in mice with gout. Because inflammation is common to both gout and flu, the team thought the keto diet could similarly deal with flu-related inflammation, which can severely damage the lungs. To put this theory to the test, the team fed mice infected with influenza A – the most serious type of the virus – either a keto or sta...
